5 Must Have Buttercream Tools

Covering a cake in buttercream is a fun and rewarding process, especially when you have the right tools.

When I first started in cake decorating there were very limited tools available, but now we have an abundance of them which can make it just as hard to decide “What do I actually need to get started?”

Here’s my guide for the essential tools you need and the benefits they offer for achieving a smooth and beautiful buttercream finish.

Let me share my journey and the must-have tools that made all the difference.

Turntable

1. Turntable

Benefit: Allows for easy rotation of the cake.

  • Makes it simpler to apply and smooth buttercream evenly around the sides and top.

  • Helps in creating a professional finish.

  • I have the LOYAL 360 turntable which I love to use, however if you are starting off with smaller, lighter weight cakes, a less expensive version will be perfectly acceptable.

Offset Spatula

2. Offset Spatula

Benefit: Provides precise and smooth buttercream application.

  • The angled design keeps your hands away from the surface for a cleaner finish.

  • Available in various sizes for different cake dimensions.

Bench scraper

3. Bench Scraper

Benefit: Achieves a smooth and even buttercream finish.

  • Scrapes off excess buttercream while rotating the cake on the turntable.

  • Helps create sharp edges and a flawless surface.

  • I use a metal one but there are many varieties available.

Cake Leveler

4. Cake Leveller or Serrated Knife

Benefit: Ensures even and flat cake layers.

  • Provides stability to your cake, making it easier to decorate.

  • A cake leveler is user-friendly for beginners, while a serrated knife can be effective with practice.

  • I use the AGBAY (single blade) as my cake leveler, which is perfect for when you make cakes every week.

Paper Towel

5. Clean Cloth & Paper Towels

Benefit: Maintains a clean working area.

  • Wipes off excess buttercream from tools for smoother application.

  • Helps keep your buttercream free of crumbs.

  • Working with buttercream can be very messy, so it’s essential that you have a clean cloth or paper towels handy.

The Challenge Without These Tools

Attempting to cover a cake in buttercream without these essential tools can be significantly more difficult and frustrating. Without a turntable, achieving an even layer of buttercream becomes a cumbersome task, as you have to manually turn the cake, often resulting in an uneven finish. Without an offset spatula or bench scraper, smoothing the buttercream can be nearly impossible, leading to a lumpy and unprofessional appearance. Each of these tools plays a crucial role in simplifying the process, ensuring that you can achieve a smooth, professional look with less effort and frustration.

Equipping yourself with the right tools can make a significant difference in your cake decorating journey. These essential items will help you achieve beautiful, professional-looking buttercream cakes, even if you're just starting out. Invest in quality tools, practice regularly, and soon you’ll be creating stunning cakes that impress
